Many people think they do not need life insurance. Most of them are mistaken. A family that is unprotected today is foolish. Life insurance is not expensive if purchased at a young age.

Permanent vs. term policies

There are reasons for permanent policies versus term insurance. The primary reason to buy a permanent policy is that health changes as we age and may be the cause of a company not issuing a policy at a preferred rate. Rated policies get expensive.

Permanent Universal Life policies can be rewritten to increase or decrease the estate benefit as the individual's life circumstances change. Term insurance is just that. An individual purchases insurance for a specific time period, ie, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 years. Instead of mortgage insurance purchase a 30 year term policy or a 15 year term policy that will give the balance of the term policy to the designated beneficiary instead of the mortgage lender.

Estate Planning

Many families purchase life insurance for estate planning. An individual who dies in 1999 with an estate of $1,000,000 will owe $134,500 in Estate Tax that must be paid within 9 months of death to the Internal Revenue Service. An individual with an estate of $1,500,000 will owe $344,500 in 1999; $335,250 in 2000/01; $326,000 in 2002/03; $268,500 in 2004; $229,500 in 2005 and $210,000 in 2006 and beyond. Would you want the funds you worked so hard to accumulate to go to the Internal Revenue Service for payment of this tax?
